SOMNIUM - A VOYAGE TO THE MOON

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Who wrote the first fiction book? Is it Isaac Asimov? H. G. Wells? Jules Verne?
Actually, the first ever science fiction book is titled Somnium and was written 400 years ago by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler. It describes a fantastic voyage to the Moon, its inhabitants,
its landscape, and the Solar System's celestial motion.
This book has never been illustrated - until now! Bettina Forget has created a series of prints and paintings based on this book.

ABOUT THE
MONTREAL ALL-NIGHTER EVENT

The exhibit's vernissage is on February 28, 2009. During the Montreal All-Nighter the artist will distribute free copies of an abridged version of Somnium to visitors of the gallery. There are empty spaces left on some pages of the book, inviting readers to create their own illustrations. You may use a series of rubber stamps created by the artists for this purpose; some of which are available in the Visual Voice Gallery, and some are hidden at other All-Nighter venues - check in the gallery for locations.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Bettina Forget is a visual artist living and working in Montreal, Quebec. Born in Germany, she has studied art at Central St-Martins School of Art in London, England and at Curtin University in Perth, Australia and Singapore.
Bettina's work focuses on the subject of astronomy, establishing a link between art and science. Pushing traditional painting techniques to their limits, she subjects her canvases to being frozen into ice, pummeled by rain and scorched by fire. She also invented a technique of cutting holes into stretched canvas and suspending smaller pieces of canvas in the voids, therefore turning paintings into three-dimensional objects.
Bettina is Director of Exhibitions of the International Association of Astronomical Artists (IAAA) and Vice-President of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) Montreal Centre.
